Q4: What are the existing research centres/programmes? What units exist that are actively carrying out social science research in NZ? What ongoing projects are there?

These might be useful for contacts, to see what research is currently or has recently been carried out, or for support.

- Universities:
University of Auckland
Auckland University of Technology
University of Waikato
Massey University (campuses at Albany, Palmerston North and Wellington)
Victoria University of Wellington
University of Canterbury
Lincoln University
University of Otago (Medical colleges also at Christchurch and Wellington).

- Technical Institutes:
There are also some 20 Polytechnics, many of which have some interest in social sciences and research. For a list go to: NZGO http://newzealand.govt.nz/
Each University and Polytech has a list on their websites of their teaching departments and their research units, and also usually a listing of expertise and annual research reports in which the recent publications of staff are displayed.

- Crown Research Institutes:
See also NZGO for a list: several have social research teams.

- Stand-alone Research Organisations:
Beyond the Universities and other Tertiary Education Providers there is a range of independent research organisations. These include, in particular:
NZCER NZ Council for Educational Research http://www.nzcer.org.nz
NZIER:  NZ Institute Economic Research.
In the Private Sector there are market research firms. For a list of almost all go to the Market Research Society site. http://www.amro.org.nz/
In addition there are other consultants with social science expertise: some may be listed in Telephone Yellow Pages but otherwise networking is required. Some belong to either ASSR or IAEA (see associations).

- Government Social Research:
The NZ Government is central to the social research enterprise in NZ as the source of much relevant data, the major player in provision of funds and an active user and provider of social science research.
Government Social Science Research units include:
Oral History Center, National Library
