Q2: How is social science research controlled in New Zealand?

There are a few bodies concerned with providing support, leadership, coordination etc. for the social sciences in NZ – several also provide on their websites a range of information pertinent to social science:

Social Sciences Ctte., RSNZ: an umbrella group representing the interests of social scientists and social science associations

BRCSS Management Ctte.: A capacity building organisation funded by the NZ Government
Spear: coordinates central government social research concerns

Social Sciences Ctte., UNESCO Commission:
Statistics Council, Stats NZ: provides advice to Stats NZ concerning official statistics

Several (internal) committees assist various funding agencies with applications for Social science research (eg Social sciences cttes. of Marsden Fund and for FoRST).

NZ Universities and other research organisations are connected up electronically through several means:

REANNZ (Research and Education Advanced Network New Zealand Ltd) is the Crown-owned company set up to establish, own and operate a high-speed telecommunications network for the research and education sectors. It supplies high-capacity, high-speed interconnections between research and education institutions (and organisations associated with them) in New Zealand and with overseas counterparts. Its subsidiary service (Karen) provides video interlinks amongst a range of sites.
