The purpose of the seminar was to assist people who are preparing submissions for the Auckland governance legislation select committee. Presentations covered the major policy issues being addressed by the current bill, together with advice on how to deal with the select committee. The seminar itself was obviously very helpful for people who were presenting on the current bill. We hope that the material will also be useful for the next bill dealing in detail with role and functions of the Council and the local boards.

Eminent domain is often used in the US context for the compulsory acquisition of land "in the public interest" and for developments that are seen to be for the greater good. This interesting area of law provides some great insight for New Zealand, particularly in the areas of urban re-development, economic development and in balancing private interests and public good.
