ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

The Institute of Public Policy launched the Graduate Programme in Economic Development in 2003 following a competitive bidding process between five New Zealand Universities. The IPP was selected by the professional association (EDANZ) as the preferred tertiary provider and this contract has now been secured through a Memorandum of Understanding which assigns the IPP the right to deliver the professional qualification for a period of five years. The Graduate programme (Certificate and Diploma) forms a key element within the EDANZ process for professional accreditation and as approved by CUAP, it is New Zealand's only tertiary programme in economic development.
Over the past two years, the IPP has expanded its educational options at more advanced levels with the introduction of Masters and Doctoral qualifications. The MPhil in Economic Development is a research degree by thesis only with the PhD programme offering candidates the highest supervised qualification awarded by the University.
In addition to the offering of formal University qualifications, the IPP has conducted workshops for economic development practitioners and ongoing professional education for policy analysts and practitioners working in local and regional economic development. The workshops are demand-led and have encompassed project and asset management, regional and labour market analyses, as well as the facilitation of a national economic development forum for individuals and agencies working 'at the coalface' of local and regional development. Particular emphasis has been placed on economic development education for Maori and Pacific communities in partnership with NgatiWhatua o Orakei, Urban Maori Authorities and the Pacific Economic Development Unit. More recently initiatives have been put in place to provide in-service education for public sector agencies working in local and regional development with the first of these courses to be conducted in 2006 linked to the graduate programme in economic development.
