Facilities/Services Data

Accessing appropriate facilities is central to the quality of many people’s lives. Unfortunately it can be difficult to access information from web-based services. On the other hand, many facilities can be directly observed or located from standard street maps. Some directory services include information on facilities: e.g. Maps

Many local authorities include information on facilities/services in a ‘community directory’ database accessible through their website. A more general NZ-wide data-base is held by MSD: Family Services - mapping

Very interesting work has been carried out at the Geohealth Laboratory at University of Canterbury: see here.
Another source of data concerning employment units in an area can be obtained from the Stats NZ annual collection of ‘Business Demographic Statistics’.  This is available through table builder for the years 2000-2007 with data from earlier years archived. Information is given in terms of Enterprises (ie ‘firms’), Geographical units (ie ‘outlets’) and full-time equivalent employment. This produces a wealth of information and here attention is directed to Geographical units and to the following types of ‘industry’. In the downloads section of the website 2007 Local Authority level data for these units is provided.
